Back to Fundraise

A

Auction of promises

Recruit your friends to offer their time and services up for auction. Think babysitter, car cleaner, 30 minute back & neck rub, chauffeur for the day, full house spring clean, personal grocery shopper, errand runner, gardener – everyone will have something they can offer so the list is endless! Be sure to advertise well in advance and if you can’t get a professional auctioneer, be sure to choose a good public speaker.

B

Bring and buy

As they say ‘one man’s junk is another man’s gold’. Get everyone at work to bring in a few nice bits or bobs – you’ll be surprised what you discover if you have a good dig in your cupboards or attic. You’re probably selling something you forgot you even had, maybe finding a bargain that you really quite fancy, plus donating the money to charity, so everyone wins!

Book sale

Good books should be read and passed on to spread the word. Get your friends and relatives to clear out their book shelves and donate the books to you to sell. You can sell them online, or make a book box at the office and either sell or loan them for a fee.

C

Car boot sale

Have a spring clean! Join your nearest car boot sale and sell your old furniture, unwanted gifts and clothes.

Clothes swap

We all get tired of our same old wardrobe. Why not host a clothes swap and get your friends to bring and buy with the money going to your cause. You could also supply drinks and snacks for a small donation.

D

Dress up or down day

A change of clothes is always refreshing. Hold a dress up or dress down day at work or school and charge a fee for wearing smart or casual clothes – the opposite of whatever your norm is.

Dinner Club

Start your own supper club and ask your friends to donate what they think their dinner’s worth! You get a good night in with your mates, while showing off your culinary skills and helping a good cause.

Donate in lieu

If you’re feeling really selfless on a special occasion – your birthday, wedding or at Christmas, set up an online fundraising page like ‘Just Giving’ and ask your friends to donate to us instead of giving you a gift. Your gift will be the reward of helping others in need.

E

Eighties night

Dress up is always a winner for a guaranteed fun night. Why not host an 80’s night and ask your guests to make a donation for their blast from the past experience.

eBay

If you’re into online shopping, why not get into online selling too? Register yourself on eBay or another auction site and auction off any unwanted items you, your family and your colleagues may have to offer. You wouldn’t believe the things people are looking to buy out there – anything and everything!

F

Fun run

Create your own fun run. To spice things up do the run in an entertaining outfit, choose an unusual route, or pick a personally challenging distance. Anything above the average run around the block should inspire people to sponsor you. You’ll be admired for your effort whilst getting good exercise helping a really good cause.

G

Guessing game

Fill a jar with small sweets and charge people to guess how many sweets there are. Of course, the closest guess wins the jar… what a treat!

H

Hula Hooping

Get involved in a local fete or festival with some hula hoop fun. People can place bets on how long you can hula for, or provide a few hoops and let people contribute to have a go. It’s a good laugh for a good cause.

Honesty box

Set up a box at work and get people to drop in a coin whenever they slip up with something – swearing, a naughty lunch-hour shopping spree, or a sneaky junk-food treat.

Pages: 1 2

I

International Evening

Host a country-themed gathering for your friends. Have native food, music and drinks. You can also offer a few interesting facts about your chosen country, get people to dress up, or speak with an accent. You’ll have a great laugh and maybe learn a few new facts too.

J

Jumble sale

Have an early spring clear-out and sell all your unwanted clothes and household items. Put signs up in your neighbourhood, slip a note under people’s doors and set up a table in the street outside your house.

K

Karaoke night

This is a great evening to host at home with a games console. Charge each person/team an entry fee and have a battle to see who gets the loudest cheers, or divide the night up into themed rounds and get the losing team of each round to make a donation. Think categories like golden oldies, 80’s pop, disco queen, rock n roll, or even classical opera!

L

Lucky dip

Ask your company or your parent’s workplace to sponsor a tempting hamper of sorts and raffle it off in a lucky dip. The more luxurious the hamper the more expensive the tickets, or the cheaper the tickets the more numbers each person can buy!

Lingerie party

Many lingerie suppliers will host a private party at your house. Have a giggle and treat yourself to something sassy to wear. Your friends can make a small donation to you for hosting the evening.

M

Match giving

Many employers are happy to help you out when it comes to charity. Ask if they can match whatever you raise and see your fundraising total double!

Murder Mystery evening

This is fantastic fun and you can find them online or in shops. Ask your friends and family to donate in return for a mysterious evening!

N

Nearly New Sale

Also known as a ‘posh jumble sale’, this is a great one for things like evening dresses and designer labels. Be selective about what people can bring to sell – only pick items that are nearly new and in great condition.

Naughty but nice

Challenge your friends or colleagues to a bake-off and sell your delicious produce for a good cause.

O

Odd jobs

Advertise your services for helping out with odd jobs, like the odd bit of gardening or helping an elder with their errands. To advertise you could send an email round the office, put a notice on the local supermarket board, or visit your neighbours door-to-door.

P

Pamper party

Get your home manicure and facial kits out, provide some yummy food treats and have the girls round for a pamper session. Put on an old romantic film and kick back. While you’re treating yourselves your friends won’t mind a small donation towards much needed treatments for those in need.

Q

Quiz night

Become Quiz Master and create your own general knowledge quiz. Get your peers or colleagues to make teams and book an area in your local pub or hall. For children you can host a junior trivia challenge instead. People will donate to join and you’re guaranteed a fun time. You could ask local businesses to sponsor a small prize too.

R

Recycle

Recycle cans for money! Some places will give you up to a penny a can. Get your friends, family and neighbours to save their empties for you. Not only charitable but good for the environment too.

Raffle

Raffles are great for raising funds and increasing awareness on a slim budget. Encourage friends, family and neighbours to donate items to be raffled off. They need not be physical things; people might donate a few hours of their time, or a particular skill that they have.

S

Sponsored silence

As they say, silence is golden. See if you and your friends can manage a whole day in silence, and don’t forget the sponsoring bit!

Swimathon

This is great for adults and children. Ask people to sponsor you per lap or mile, depending on how strong a swimmer you are!

Street Collection

Contact us for branded tins and buckets for a street or tube station collection. Just remember to get a permit from your local council first.

T

Talent show

Hold a talent show with your friends or colleagues. Sing a song, read a poem, do some magic, play an instrument… everyone can get involved, especially for a good cause.

Tupperware party

Many Tupperware companies will host a private party at your house. Have your friends round and treat yourself to something that makes domestic duties easier! Your friends can make a donation to you for hosting the evening.

U

Unwanted Gifts

There’s no need for gifts that aren’t quite ‘you’ to go to waste. Ask your friends for any unwanted Christmas or birthday gifts and sell them online or use them as prizes to host a raffle or quiz.

V

Valentines Party

Host a candlelit evening for all your single friends and perhaps do a bit of match making while you’re at it! Or, host an anti-valentine party on Valentine’s Day! Ask your guests to pay an entrance fee.

W

Wine tasting

Indulge your cultural side with an evening of fine wines, and of course the cheese to match! You can buy in bulk then ask your friends to pay a contribution, which is more than your costs.

X

X-Factor Party

Ask some guests to come as their favourite contestant and a few as the judges. Have a laugh imitating the stars in an X-Factor style sing-off.

Y

Yes day

Put smiles on faces wherever you go for a day by saying ‘yes’ to people’s requests (within reason of course!). When someone’s wish has been your command, ask for a donation. Please contact us if you’d like a collection tin or bucket.

Z

Zany dress day

Charge people at work or school to come in fancy or zany dress! Get people in the spirit by sticking up posters of clowns and other easy fancy dress outfits.

Zumba workout

Bond with your mates over a private Zumba workout. You could speak to the teacher about a reduced charitable rate or ask your friends to contribute more than the cost of the lesson.

London’s Savoy Hotel was the glitzy venue for a fundraiser that raised over £200,000 for the Foundation and provided a welcome and important association with the charity to many corporate organisations.

Supporters of our 2011 event included:

Staff fundraising – and Matched Giving

Dress down days are a firm favourite but why not dedicate one day a year to supporting charities. And those keen fundraisers amongst your dedicated staff, why not incentivise them further by matching monies raised for charity.

Katie found it very helpful to ease tiredness when carrying out her manual massage, and particularly when massaging hard to reach areas.

So thank you to you and Katie and everyone in the Foundation. What a brilliant way to make living with burns so much more manageable!”

The KPF Ambassadors are a crucial group of individuals – and include burns survivors or those with scar disfigurements – who are key to developing the awareness of the Foundation’s support to this community and to the wider public, and who also help raise much needed funds. Ambassadors are testament to, and an embodiment of, the Foundation’s mission – living normal lives with burns or scar disfigurements.

Chantelle

AVM (Arteriovenous malformation) on the nose

Chantelle has been bullied nearly her whole life because of a facial birthmark which spread across the centre of her face. It wasn’t until she was 14 that doctors realised that her disfigurement was in fact a life-threatening growth of arteries and blood vessels, known as an AVM. As puberty hit, the vessels began to multiply uncontrollably.

AVMs often pass high volumes of blood and are extremely unstable. Stress or a minor knock can lead to a fatal haemorrhage. Surgeons have embarked on a radical new procedure that will ultimately lead to the removal of the entire growth. No one knows how much of Chantelle’s face the growth has claimed and until the surgery is over, how she will look.

Chantelle recently represented KPF at the Disco Inferno which raised £1000 for the Foundation.

Adele

An epileptic fit in a hot shower left Adele with 46% burns on her arms and back

Adele was a ballet student at a prestigious private school when a terrible accident changed the course of her life. No-one knew she had epilepsy before this incident happened five years ago. Adele was taking a shower before a Christmas shopping trip with her mother, when suddenly she suffered an epileptic fit.
During the attack, she knocked the tap and collapsed under hot water. Her mother discovered her under the still-flowing scalding water. She was rushed into the specialist burns unit at Chelmsford where she received emergency and reconstructive treatment in the intensive care unit.

Adele was left with severe scarring on her back and arms. Deciding that the physical perfection demanded by the ballet world meant her dreams of dancing for a living were over, she adapted. Instead, she finished her schooling in the general performing arts, took her A levels, got straight As and has just started a natural science degree at Durham University.

Adele is now finished with surgery and thinks she should be accepted as she is. Adele’s mother wrote to Katie to tell her about her daughter’s experience and the dilemma they now face – it was her letter, among many others, that prompted Katie to set up the Foundation which led to the Channel 4 series.

Recently Adele released a track with Eden Voices, “True Colours” with proceeds going to the Foundation.

Emily

At 7 years old Emily suffered 70% burns

Emily was burned during a house fire while on a family holiday in France. Her younger brother was found quickly and escaped with relatively few injuries but Emily was trapped under molten ceiling tiles for some time before she was rescued, suffering burns to such an extent that her heart stopped several times.

Doctors believe she managed to survive only because she was so young. Emily spent four months in a French hospital and was one of the first Irish patients to use a plastic facemask to help smooth the scarring on her face. Over the years, Emily has withstood countless skin grafts over her body and believes she will continue to have treatment throughout her life.

Despite her severe injuries, Emily’s parents were determined not to hide her but to get her back into the swing of life as soon as possible. Returning to school, Emily was accepted without problems and is still part of a tight knit group of friends that have known each other since primary school.

With a law degree, masters and an internship in Washington DC under her belt, Emily has tried never to let her scars get in the way of what she wants to achieve.

Emily has run a mini-marathon, raising nearly £600 for the Foundation, and will run another in the summer.

40% burns in BBQ fire

Will was badly burnt when a Bank Holiday barbeque got out of control and he was engulfed in a ball of flames. Rushed to the specialist burns unit at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, Will was on the critical list for two weeks during which he endured eight skin graft operations to repair the burn damage to his neck and torso.

The shock of the incident has left Will to cope with both the immense pain of his injuries and worry over missing his GCSEs. An outgoing, boisterous boy who loves wakeboarding and biking, Will has had to adjust to different activities and concentrate on rebuilding his life.

Will is doing a Skydive for the Foundation.

Amit

Neurofibromatosis Type 1

Born in Assam, India, Amit’s condition originally manifested in darker skin patches. But when his facial tumours developed, the whole family moved to Britain to seek the best treatment for Amit.

Amit’s condition is incurable and since he was a little boy he has undergone many operations to “de-bulk” the tumours on his face, which will never stop growing. At fourteen, Amit’s left eye had to be removed, damaged irrevocably by the tumours. He now has a prosthetic eye in its place.

Amit’s dad, who died last year, believed that going to university was the key to improving his son’s prospects. When Katie first met Amit, he was about to fulfil that wish and be the first of his family to go. Last Autumn, he started an economics and marketing degree, hoping to eventually work in the business world.

Amit recently organised a successful Talent Show in Birmingham to raise funds for the Foundation.

Pfeiffer Syndrome

Kayleigh has a rare genetic syndrome that fuses some of the skeletal joints in the womb, and has affected her facial bones and the bones in her hands and feet. She has withstood surgery and treatment her whole life, including a procedure when she was just a toddler which expanded her skull to prevent permanent brain damage. However, Kayleigh’s face was still malformed, and it was only when she reached seventeen and her skull had stopped growing, that her medical team were able to tackle this problem.

At Great Ormond Street hospital, surgeons fitted a metal frame to her head, which, millimetre by millimetre, painstakingly attempted to move the mid section of her face forward and correct the misalignment.

Kayleigh has recently supported a school presentation for funding from the Youth Philantrophy Inititative.

George

Suffers from an inherited skin cancer affecting his face and throat

George suffers from squamous cell carcinoma which affects the nerves on his face and has led to the loss of some nose tissue. However, he also has a second form of cancer, a rare hereditary skin disease called Ferguson Smith syndrome that manifests as raised spots. Mostly these spots are benign, but can develop into unsightly growths that then need to be surgically removed.

George has already had his nose partially removed but his facial cancer continues to grow. He’s now squaring up to extensive surgery to tackle its spread. The operation will at least extend, if not save, his life but may leave George very badly disfigured. George could wake up to find the surgeons had no choice but to remove parts of his nose, jaw, cheek and palate.

His father also had Ferguson-Smiths, and it cost him his nose. George saw the hugely negative impact this had on his father’s life and wants to help change societies attitudes so that his children don’t have to have the impact of taunts that he went through as a child.

George has also been offering great support by getting contact with people that have emailed into the charity with Ferguson Smiths Syndrome.

Meet Katie

Katie Piper is a presenter and the founder of The Katie Piper Foundation. In 2008, she was the victim of a rape and acid attack that left her with severe facial disfigurement.

Katie spent seven weeks in the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, before starting a two year stint where she wore a special plastic pressure mask for 23 hours of every day. Prior to the attack, Katie was a model and budding TV presenter with a hectic social life and a glowing future in the public eye. The attack ruined Katie from the inside out. Like many, she believed her life was over now that she was a ‘burns victim’.

Following pioneering surgery led by Mr Mohammad Jawad FRCS, Katie was referred to Centre Ster in Lamalou-les-Bains; a specialist rehabilitation centre in France. This centre had a remarkable impact on her recovery, both mentally and physically. It was here whilst interacting with other burns survivors, that she made the most progress in regaining control of her life.

“I am proof that disfigurement doesn’t have to destroy lives”

Katie also began researching support for burns survivors and she was introduced to other effective non-surgical treatments such as laser, camouflage make-up, and medical tattooing.

Katie has undergone extensive reconstructive surgery and she’s come a long way. Relying heavily on family and friends, and thanks to the outstanding treatment she received in France alongside her own incredible determination, she no longer feels that her burns define her.

“I’m happy with who I am and I’ve learnt it’s OK to live with disfigurement, and that scars don’t mean I am unattractive.”

In 2009 Katie made the big decision to share her story in a remarkable film for Channel 4, Katie: My Beautiful Face. From CCTV footage of the attack to the day she first steps out of her parents’ house alone, Katie takes you through the daily ordeal of rebuilding her life, the pioneering treatments that helped save her, and the effects on both her and her family.

Since then her achievements have only climbed, from talking on television and radio around the world to setting up the Katie Piper Foundation. In early 2011 Katie released her book of memoirs, Beautiful while a second Channel 4 collaboration My Beautiful Friends first aired in March 2011.

The response to Katie’s story has been overwhelming. By telling it she hopes to increase awareness for burns survivors and support them by sharing information about the kind of rehab she had and her experiences in getting to where she is today.

Katie’s Treatment

The outstanding treatment and physiotherapy Katie received as an inpatient at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in the UK was extremely important for her road to recovery. However, once she was discharged she left a lot of support behind her, just when fighting the scars became most difficult.

Katie spent five three-week blocks in a specialist scar treatment clinic, Centre Ster, in France. She feels that the non-surgical treatment she received there was a critical contributor to her recovery. With time, her scars became soft, supple and pale. Her skin grew more flexible and her face began to feel like her own again. Slowly, her battered self-confidence and belief started to come back, as she learnt to accept that her burns didn’t have to define her.

From 9am – 5pm daily, Katie received a combination of simple, cost-efficient treatments proven to be most effective in improving the appearance of burns and scars. These included intensive deep tissue massage, one-to-one specially adapted physiotherapy, Endermology (machines that work at softening the skin and making it more malleable), hydrotherapy, high pressure jet therapy, and silicone treatments, alongside the wearing of pressure garments.

Another important part of the treatment for Katie was being in a supportive environment with people going through a similar experience. This was instrumental in showing her that she could beat her scars and it taught her to believe that she could stop them from cocooning her. The structure of a daily routine also meant she had a reason to get up in the morning when she felt least capable, which really helped her regain control of her life.

Being fortunate enough to have the support of extended rehab and scar management – not only for the physical scarring but the mental and emotional challenges of this trauma too – made Katie realise she could do more to support other burns survivors in their recovery process.
